Leisure Centre Consultation

Leisure Consultation logo-v3

Spelthorne Borough Council is proposing to develop a new Leisure Centre for the Borough. The flagship facility will be fully inclusive with a mix of facilities that will meet a broad range of needs and age groups. Sports and fitness activities play a fundamental role in the health and wellbeing of our community and Spelthorne Borough Council are determined to play its part in supporting a healthier and more active community.

The existing Spelthorne Leisure Centre in Staines-upon-Thames has been well used for many years but maintenance costs are rising and customers’ leisure requirements have changed significantly since the original Leisure Centre was built. The existing centre cannot incorporate the wide range of facilities required by today’s health-conscious society and refurbishment of the current centre is not considered a feasible option. A condition survey indicated that a considerable amount of investment would be needed to extend its life much beyond 2021, which is not cost effective and would cause major disruption to current users. A refurbished centre would also have a more limited lifespan (approx. 15-20 years), be less energy efficient and not offer the same range of facilities as a purpose built new-build centre which can deliver the required facilities mix and be built to the highest energy standards.

Feedback from the last public consultation in 2018 showed there was strong support and indeed need for a new Leisure Centre in Spelthorne and the main concern raised was the proposed location in Staines Park. The Council listened and took on-board all the comments from residents and is now proposing to build the Leisure Centre between the Council offices in Knowle Green and the current Leisure Centre site (which will ultimately be used for customer parking). The proposed location benefits from being within walking distance of the Bus and Railway Stations in Staines and is close to bus stops on the Kingston Road.

Proposed Site 2020-v2

The previous consultation exercise provided a great deal of useful information on what facilities people wanted to see in any new Leisure Centre. We received over 2300 feedback forms which has informed these design proposals. This information, together with the results of extensive research and consultation with users, sports groups, and Sport England, have been used in coming up with our latest proposals and the early design concepts have been developed to make best use of the more limited space offered by the alternative location

We want to know what you think about these proposals for a new Spelthorne Leisure Centre including the revised location, the facilities we are planning to incorporate within the new centre and our latest designs. Your views will help us to identify any key concerns about our revised proposals

This consultation ran from midday Friday 28 2020  - Friday 10 April 2020

Now that the consultation has closed, we are considering everyone's feedback and compiling a final action plan which will be presented for approval by elected members.
